We can offer a great range of facilities at Westhay Opportunity Centre. We have a class room and kitchen area which acts as a hub for all activities at Westhay, in addition to this more recently, we have installed a conservatory to extend our classroom to cater to our ever expanding number of clients.
Last year we installed a large animal shed, this is home to a variety of creature’s great and small, ranging from rabbits and chickens to pigs and ponies, depending on the time of year. We have found this hugely beneficial, as it requires daily attention and creates instructions and routines to follow that can really boost independence.
The woodcraft shed and boot room, does exactly what it says on the tin! This is used more regularly during the rainier months, especially around the Christmas period, when we are creating crafts and gifts to sell at our annual Christmas fayre.
Our office, although mainly used by staff, provides the opportunity for any office based learning and secretarial work. As well as this it provides a quiet escape for any students who perhaps need an afternoon of peace. It is also the current home of our onsite occupational therapist.
Moving on to our outdoor activities, is where we really get busy! We have over 10 raised beds that throughout the seasons, house a huge variety of fruit, veg and plants. As well as our polytunnel and potting shed. This ensures our service users are exposed to the whole process of horticultural projects, from the sewing of seeds, to the harvest and tasting of produce. We have over an acre of orchards and paddock areas, home to nearly 100 chickens, sheep, alpacas, pigs, ducks and even a goat. This means, collecting eggs, feeding livestock, brushing ponies and general maintenance is a common, daily practice.
Activities also expand offsite. We are constantly busy with conservation work, spanning hundreds of acres over the peat moors. We have added to this experience by building a homemade, portable, shepherd’s hut of which we transport to each location, this enables us to eat lunch whilst out and about and to shelter from any adverse weather!
We also regularly explore Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve, just half a mile down the road, to enjoy the variety of wildlife it has to offer, we do this either on foot, bicycle or by tricycle.
Sports and exercise programmes also take place every Monday and Wednesday in the local village hall for all of those who wish to partake, this is becoming increasingly popular.
fully support equality and diversity with our policies and procedures, subsequently all our facilites are fully accessible.
Where possible, we run a mini bus in the morning and afternoons to and from Westhay for our service users. This mainly operates in the mendip area. However there is limited space and your social worker may be able to help you further with this.
Westhay also offer a P.A. service during evenings and weekends, this can range from supporting clients with gym and swimming sessions to discos and social events. Again this service is limited.
We are fortunate to have an excellent, dedicated team of staff at Westhay. We have six full time staff members, two members of staff that work part time and one volunteer, as well as our young work experience members of staff. Many of our staff have come to us from Lufton College or Avalon School, meaning they not only have years of experience at working with learning difficulties, but also personally know a majority of our service users.
Westhay Opportunity centre is open Monday to Friday for 49 weeks of the year. Work starts promptly at 10:00 and clients our day ends at 15:00.
Although we have given you a brief insight of what we do, why not organise a visit so you can see for yourself, what else we have to offer!
